NOMI DRORY
Artist’s Statement:
In my recent paintings brought together to form this show, I have attempted to explore the relationship between the artist-at-work and space. More specifically, I have tried to depict the actual, visceral experience of looking with intensity at the space, to capture an experience integral to the artist process. Working with oil on paper, board and canvas, I have produced paintings of architectural elements, such as walls, doors, and windows, combined with variety of still-life, composed of simple, everyday objects, including a jug, water pitcher, pot and window. I placed these objects at specific points in space in order to create tension and to call attention to the distance between them. My primary interest was not in portraying the objects as they exist, but in depicting them as location upon which the eye rests when traveling through space. Between some of the objects, I have used pencil lines to dramatize a particular direction that the eye travels when moving form point to point. I have tried in this way to produce a kind of Cartesian mapping of the space. In some of the compositions, I have positioned objects near the edges of the canvas; I sought in this way to convey how my eye is drawn to the peripheries of my vision. Another visual element I wanted to explore was Light. Both in the interior paintings and view of outdoors, I wanted to convey the way light reveals the objects and transcends the architectural space into a personal realm that is integrated with concepts of memory and time.
