MARK GAGNON
Artist Statement
My intention with my art was never to make a huge statement or to change the world, but to simply express what I was unable to through other means.
When I was young, I expressed myself through art because I had an encouraging parent who saw talent. As a young adult, I drew and painted because it was a way of freely expressing myself without client restrictions and mandates that I had experienced as a graphic designer. Now, I do it because it is the purest way I can channel my creative energy.
My work is intuitive, with the only real planning at the beginning. A thin layer of cheesecloth is adhered to the canvas by several layers of gesso. The actual painting is next. The paint is applied, wiped off, smeared, re-applied, rubbed etc., until the correct look is established. This can happen quickly, or, over a period of days. The work itself tells me when it’s finished. My current work, which is mainly landscapes and cloudscapes reflect this technique.
